VOLUNTEER FOR US!

Help bring our mission of hope and empowerment to life.

Volunteers are the heart and hands of our organization.

As a volunteer, you can help women and girls from all walks of life acquire the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to make sound decisions and improve their lives. You don’t need a finance background — we’ll give you everything you need.

5 REASONS TO VOLUNTEER

STEP 1

Choose An Opportunity

YourLife Finance Class Instructor

YourLife Finance Classes are 60 minute classes that cover basic personal finance information such as debt, budgeting, saving and credit.  A majority of our classes are taught between 8am and 6pm, Monday-Saturday. Classes are held in schools, prisons, domestic violence shelters, social service agencies, colleges, and community centers throughout Houston.

RISE! Guest Speaker

We are looking for women with diverse backgrounds to talk with RISE! groups at Houston-area high schools. Classes are usually 60 minutes long between 9am and 3pm. There are two speaking opportunities for RISE!

Administrative Volunteers

Administrative volunteers prepare class materials, update files, help prepare for special events, and enter data for at least four hours per week from 9am to 3pm, Monday-Friday.

STEP 2

Complete An Application

All prospective volunteers must complete a volunteer application before they can begin volunteering. The application lets us know how you would like to be involved and gives us a sense of your strengths.

The Application is short and only takes a few minutes to fill out.

Also, please note the application process includes a basic background check.

STEP 3

Attend Volunteer Orientation

All volunteers interested in teaching YourLife Finance Classes attend a two-hour orientation, where we teach you everything you need to know and provide materials to help you prepare. We offer volunteer orientations on a monthly basis.

For all of those interested in becoming a RISE! guest speaker, you must also attend an orientation. Orientations are offered twice per year. Once prior to the fall school semester and once prior to the spring.

Upcoming Volunteer Orientations

Upcoming dates will be posted.

FAQs

The first step to becoming a volunteer is to complete our Volunteer Application. On the Volunteer Application, select the volunteer job(s) that interest you! Someone from our team will then contact you with more information, including information about any upcoming orientations for the job(s) you’ve selected.

Yes, it is a requirement that we run background screenings on all volunteers. Volunteers are asked to check a box on the Volunteer Application which gives us permission to run a background screening using the information provided on their application. Volunteers must clear our Background Screening process to volunteer. This is an important measure we take to ensure the safety of our clients, partners, volunteers and staff.

Nope! With our RISE! and YourLife programs, we provide training and workbooks with all information volunteers need to know. We also keep volunteers informed through workshops and additional trainings.

We currently do not offer volunteer opportunities for large groups.

YourLife Finance Class (YLFC) Volunteer Instructor

After you’ve submitted your Volunteer Application and attended our Volunteer Information Session, the next step will be for you to attend our YLFC Volunteer Orientation. After this, your next step is to observe a class. Then, you’ll be ready to teach with The Women’s Resource!

YLFC Volunteer Opportunities are offered throughout the year, Monday thru Friday, during the day and in the evening. We occasionally have opportunities to volunteer on Saturdays, but not often.

Classes are one hour long; however, volunteers should also account for the time needed to pick up their class materials from The Women’s Resource office, travel to and from the class location, and prepare for the class beforehand.

Our classes do not take place at our office, but rather throughout the city of Houston. Click here to view our list of partners.

We require volunteers to teach a minimum of four YourLife Finance Classes a year.

RISE! Guest Speaker

After you’ve submitted your Volunteer Application and attended our Volunteer Information Session, the next step will be for you to attend our RISE! Guest Speaker Orientation. RISE! Guest Speaker Orientations are typically offered during the following months: August – September and January – February. After you’ve attended this orientation, you’ll be ready to start signing up for RISE! Guest Speaker opportunities.

RISE! Guest Speaker Volunteer Opportunities are offered during the school year typically from September through the month of April.

RISE! Guest Speakers volunteer in the schools where RISE! takes place. Click here to view our list of partner schools.
